Waldseemuller World Map — Antique World Map Print

In 1507, the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller published a wall map of the world that became the first to use the name "America" for the newly encountered lands across the Atlantic, honoring the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Printed from twelve woodblocks in a run of roughly 1,000 copies, it was also the first map to depict the Americas as a continuous landmass separated from Asia by open ocean. Nearly all copies were lost until a single surviving example was rediscovered in a German castle in 1901, and it is now known as "America's birth certificate."
