Martin Waldseemüller's 1507 world map holds a singular place in cartographic history as the first printed map to label the New World "America," a tribute to the explorer Amerigo Vespucci whose voyages had convinced European scholars that a previously unknown continent lay across the Atlantic. Compiled from twelve separate woodblocks and combining the classical geography of Ptolemy with the latest reports from Vespucci's expeditions, it reshaped how Europe pictured the globe. The map vanished from scholarly view for nearly four centuries until its rediscovery in 1901, and today it is recognized as one of the most important documents in the history of geography.
