"Wereldkaart met decoratieve randen" is Dutch for "world map with decorative borders," a name that describes an entire genre of 17th-century Dutch cartography known as the carte-à-figures. Amsterdam's great map publishers, including the Blaeu and Hondius workshops, competed to frame their world maps with elaborate side panels depicting allegorical figures, city views, and scenes of the four seasons or the peoples of the world. These decorative borders turned a scientific document into a luxury object, meant to be displayed on the walls of merchants and scholars who could afford the height of Dutch Golden Age craftsmanship.
