Linnaeus Tripe photographed the base of the vimana — the towering sanctuary tower — of the Brihadeshvara Temple in Thanjavur (Tanjore) in 1858. Built at the start of the 11th century under the Chola king Rajaraja I, the temple's vimana rises some 66 metres and remains one of the great achievements of South Indian temple architecture. Tripe's salt prints from waxed-paper negatives, made as part of his survey for the Madras government, are among the earliest photographic records of the site.
