West Lake in Hangzhou, China, has been a subject of painting, poetry, and mapmaking for nearly a thousand years, its willow-lined shores and pagoda-topped hills forming one of the most celebrated landscapes in Chinese culture. By the Southern Song dynasty, artists had already codified the "Ten Scenes of West Lake," a set of iconic views that the Kangxi Emperor later inscribed by name in 1699, and panoramic prints of the lake circulated widely from the 18th century onward. This panorama continues that long tradition of picturing West Lake's pavilions, causeways, and misty hills as a single sweeping view.
