J.M.W. Turner filled sketchbooks throughout his life with rapid studies of trees, foliage, and plant life, using them to build the botanical knowledge that grounded his more finished landscapes. This study of a tree in bloom reflects that close observational habit, capturing the structure and texture of branches and blossom with an economy of line. Studies like this, rarely exhibited in Turner's lifetime, are valued today for showing the careful naturalist's eye behind his more famous atmospheric and dramatic landscapes.
