Painted in 1894, this watercolor captures a quiet, tense moment along the rocky Maine coast just before a storm rolls in, its smooth turquoise water rendered in pure transparent washes beneath a darkening horizon. Winslow Homer, who had settled at Prout's Neck, Maine, the previous decade, used a wet-on-wet technique inspired by Japanese ink painting to blend sea, sky, and rain into one atmosphere. It is held in the Art Institute of Chicago's Martin A. Ryerson Collection.

Four stars because it is excellent and I paid a little more than I wanted to. The quality of the materials is obvious the moment you handle it. It gave the powder room the anchor it was missing. It does everything I hoped it would.
