Winslow Homer painted this rugged seascape in 1893, a decade after settling into near isolation at Prout's Neck, Maine, where the pounding surf and rocky shoreline became his primary subject. Stripped of any human presence, the composition uses sharp diagonals and vigorous brushwork to convey the raw power of the Maine coast. The work entered the Art Institute of Chicago's collection in 1931, a gift from the Chicago collector Arthur Jerome Eddy.

This is a solid buy at a slightly high price. The finish looks even across the entire surface. There is a small imperfection near one edge that I have decided to like. Our driver leaves everything at the end of a long gravel driveway and it still arrived in perfect shape. It has made the hallway feel more finished.

The colors are richer in person than they look on a screen. I would pay more and still feel good about it.
The subject was exactly what I was hunting for and the reproduction is clean. Only the far edges of Coast of Maine lose a little crispness. Worth the money overall.
