Painted in 1866, this oil is one of five works Winslow Homer completed on the fashionable pastime of croquet, newly imported to the United States from Britain. Rendered with bold patterning and bright outdoor light, it captures men and women at leisure on a summer afternoon, part of Homer's early turn from Civil War illustration toward oil painting. The work is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
