Signed and dated 1882, this watercolor shows two young women and two fishermen in a coble cutting through coastal waters, painted during Winslow Homer's period living in the fishing village of Cullercoats on the northeast coast of England. The work contrasts the solid, carefully observed figures and boat with loose, atmospheric passages of mist and spray in opaque white watercolor. It has been part of the Art Institute of Chicago's Martin A. Ryerson Collection since 1933.

Faded and flat
The item is passable and the experience of getting it was not. It is hard to make out the smaller parts of Fishing off Scarborough from more than a few feet away.
