Painted in 1882 during Winslow Homer's stay on England's rugged northeast coast, this watercolor places one of his favorite models, Maggie Storey, on the high chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head. Homer used diluted opaque white watercolor in broad, expressive strokes to render mist and cloud, a technique he adopted from English watercolorists to suggest atmosphere and distance. The work has been part of the Art Institute of Chicago's Martin A. Ryerson Collection since 1933.
Printed edge to edge on a soft, durable woven area rug with a comfortable, non-slip feel.
