Painted in 1892 and signed 'Winslow Homer 1892/Northwoods Club N.Y.,' this watercolor shows a doe and buck pausing at the edge of an Adirondack meadow as they sense an unseen presence. Homer paired the two deer with two tall white pines, a species then endangered by overharvesting, quietly linking concern for wildlife with concern for the region's vanishing old-growth forest. The work is held in the Art Institute of Chicago's Mr. and Mrs. Martin A. Ryerson Collection.
