Painted in 1878, this watercolor shows a young woman gazing at newly opened peach blossoms, a quiet scene of early spring tinged with nostalgia for a fading rural way of life. Winslow Homer's light, Impressionist-influenced palette and the calligraphic precision of the tree's branches reflect both French and Japanese influences on his work of the period. The painting is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
