Camille Pissarro painted the wooded paths and modest houses of L'Hermitage, a hillside hamlet on the edge of Pontoise, again and again between 1866 and 1883, using the unpretentious rural district as the subject for what are now considered his early masterpieces. Stripping away the sentimental or historical overtones common to earlier landscape painting, Pissarro's direct, unvarnished views of L'Hermitage helped lay the groundwork for Impressionism and later influenced painters, including Cézanne, who studied alongside him there.
