Presenting the world as two side-by-side hemispheres, rather than a single continuous projection, became the standard format for decorative world maps by the mid-17th century, popularized by Dutch publishers including the Blaeu and Visscher workshops. The format let cartographers show both poles and minimize the distortion that plagued single-sheet projections, while leaving generous space in the corners for allegorical figures, ships, and decorative cartouches. By the time this map was made, the double-hemisphere format had become as much a decorative convention as a scientific one, instantly recognizable as the signature look of Golden Age Dutch cartography.
