Painted around 1885 in Nuenen in the Netherlands, "A Peasant Woman Digging in Front of Her Cottage" reflects the early phase of Vincent van Gogh's career, when he focused on the hard, dignified labor of rural peasants rendered in a dark, earthy palette inspired by Jean-François Millet and Dutch realist painting. Van Gogh made numerous studies of peasant figures at work during this period, culminating in his first major painting, "The Potato Eaters." This somber, tonal style would soon give way to the vivid color and expressive brushwork he developed after moving to Paris in 1886.
Jacquard-woven as a soft, double-sided tapestry throw with fringed edges — a warm layer for the sofa or bed.
