Here is a question that sounds simple and turns out to be surprisingly hard: when a horse gallops, is there ever a moment when all four hooves leave the ground at once? For centuries no one could say for certain. The legs move too fast for the eye to follow.

Then, in 1878, a photographer set a row of cameras beside a California racetrack and settled the argument forever — and, almost by accident, took a giant step toward the invention of film.

A wager the eye could not win
The debate over the galloping horse was old and genuinely unresolved. Painters had for generations shown running horses with all four legs splayed out, front and back, like a rocking horse frozen mid-leap. But nobody actually knew whether that pose ever occurred, because the motion was simply too quick to observe. It was the kind of question that needed a machine faster than the human eye.

The challenge was as much technical as it was scientific. Early photography demanded long exposures — a subject often had to hold still for the camera — so capturing anything moving at the speed of a galloping horse, and doing it a dozen times in a fraction of a second, was near the outer edge of what the technology could do. To even attempt it, Muybridge had to push shutters and chemistry harder and faster than usual, engineering a way to make each camera fire in a sliver of an instant.

In a real sense, the horse forced the invention of the tools; the picture could not exist until someone made photography quick enough to take it. The man who took it on was Eadweard Muybridge, working with the backing of Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horseman.

In June 1878, at Stanford's farm in Palo Alto, Muybridge set up an experiment on the track. His subject was a mare named Sallie Gardner. His tool was a battery of twelve cameras arranged in a line along the course, each fitted with a fast shutter and triggered in sequence by threads stretched across the track — as the horse ran through, it broke the threads one after another and photographed itself.

What the pictures proved
The results were revolutionary. Laid out in sequence, Muybridge's frames dissected the gallop into its true, invisible stages — and they proved that a galloping horse is briefly airborne, with all four hooves off the ground at the same instant. But there was a twist that overturned centuries of painting.

The moment of suspension does not happen when the legs are stretched out fore and aft, as artists had always drawn it. It happens when the legs are gathered up and folded under the body, mid-stride. The dramatic flying-gallop pose of classical art was, it turned out, simply wrong. The camera had seen what no painter ever could.

The myth of the $25,000 bet
A famous story clings to this experiment: that the whole thing began to settle a $25,000 bet over whether a horse ever fully leaves the ground. It is a great tale, and you will hear it repeated everywhere — but it is very likely exaggerated. Historians who have looked for solid primary evidence of such a wager have not found it.

Stanford's real motivation appears to have been more sober and more interesting: a serious commitment to the science of horse breeding and training, using photography to understand exactly how his animals moved. The truth is less like a barroom bet and more like a rich man funding research — which, happily, is what actually happened.

From still frames to moving pictures
Muybridge did not stop at proving a point about hooves. He grasped that if a series of still photographs could break motion apart, the same series, shown quickly enough, could put motion back together. In 1879 he built a device he called the zoopraxiscope, which projected his sequential images in rapid succession so that the horse appeared to gallop on a screen — a painted, spinning disc of frames brought to life by light.

It was, in effect, a moving picture before cinema existed. That leap, from frozen instants to the illusion of continuous movement, is a direct ancestor of film. Every movie ever made owes something to a mare named Sallie Gardner and a row of cameras by a racetrack. Muybridge spent much of the rest of his career pursuing the same idea to its limits.

He went on to photograph an enormous catalogue of humans and animals in motion — people walking, running, climbing stairs, and animals of every kind — producing thousands of sequential studies that artists and scientists still consult today. The gridded, frame-by-frame format he pioneered is now so familiar that we forget how radical it was: the first time anyone had truly held motion still and laid it out to be read.
