The Story in the Margin
George Inness was one of the most influential American landscape painters of the nineteenth century, developing a moody, atmospheric style that moved away from the detailed, panoramic vistas of the Hudson River School toward a more personal, poetic interpretation of nature. "A Marine" reflects his fascination with the shifting light and atmosphere of the American coast, rendered with the soft, hazy brushwork that came to define his mature work. Inness's later career was deeply shaped by his Swedenborgian religious beliefs, which held that the natural world was a visible expression of spiritual truth.
Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.

This was a gift for my sister and she called me the day it arrived. I have wanted something by Inness since college, and A Marine was the one to get.
It made the playroom feel finished in a way I could not manage on my own. The shading in A Marine has a depth I never noticed in books. It has been worth every minute of the wait.
This is my fourth order from this shop and the standard has not slipped once. The texture in A Marine makes Inness feel present in the room. It has handled the dry air in Denver better than most things we own. An easy five stars from me. 👌
This shop does everything right, from checkout to delivery. It has made me appreciate A Marine more than I already did.
This went well past what I expected. I bought this for A Marine and got far more than I paid for. Shipping took three days door to door. It is the best thing in the powder room now.
