George Inness was one of the most influential American landscape painters of the nineteenth century, developing a moody, atmospheric style that moved away from the detailed, panoramic vistas of the Hudson River School toward a more personal, poetic interpretation of nature. "A Marine" reflects his fascination with the shifting light and atmosphere of the American coast, rendered with the soft, hazy brushwork that came to define his mature work. Inness's later career was deeply shaped by his Swedenborgian religious beliefs, which held that the natural world was a visible expression of spiritual truth.

I ordered it on a Friday and it was here Monday…
My only complaint is that I wish they made a bigger version. It captures A Marine well enough that I stopped looking for a better one. It made it through hurricane season on the coast with no problems at all. It was a good decision.
